What's this about?

I embarked on The Sketchbook Project because I really like the idea of artists all over the world giving their sketchbooks to be kept in a library, for anyone to look at. I chose the theme "Travel With Me", not because I'm going to actually travel anywhere, but because I consider wherever I am to be a stop on a journey, a place where I suddenly notice something beautiful or interesting, and feel the urge to make a drawing, a painting, or a photograph. I like the idea of carrying this little book around with me (something I've often done anyway), so that when I get that urge, I make the sketch, and later, people will be able to travel with me on my little journeys around my world.

Metro sketches, 11/5/11

Riding the Metro into DC

I always draw people on the train, ever since I was in college in Philadelphia.

Acorns, 11/3/11

Neighborhood acorns

Picked up on a walk to go see the construction machines in the neighborhood.

Little excavator, 10/30/11

This sketchbook is called "Travel with me" - that title was chosen ironically, because I seldom travel anywhere these days. Luckily, with the street widening that has been underway in my neighborhood since the summer, I don't have to travel far to find interesting things to draw!

Intersection of Braddock and Poplar Tree, 10/23/11

This is a busy intersection near my house. I love the complicated tangle of wires, and the large, colorful traffic lights in the foreground. I've photographed this from different angles, but this is the first time I stood there and drew it.

Oak leaf from my neighborhood, 10/18/11

Sometimes my "travels" are walks around my neighborhood. I picked up this oak leaf, but didn't see the tree it came from. It must have blown over from another yard.

Visit to a construction site, 10/16/11

Off-road dump truck

My travels today took me on a walk to a nearby road-widening project. Lots of great construction equipment over there, and a perfect fall day for walking and drawing.

Visit to Baltimore - 9/30/11

Marina at Baltimore's Inner Harbor

I spent the day with my step-mom, Marjorie, in Baltimore, and we walked around near the Inner Harbor. I love boats - I drew them with a Sharpie fine, like I drew the construction equipment this summer, by starting at one point and just drawing until the page was full.
