What's this about?

I embarked on The Sketchbook Project because I really like the idea of artists all over the world giving their sketchbooks to be kept in a library, for anyone to look at. I chose the theme "Travel With Me", not because I'm going to actually travel anywhere, but because I consider wherever I am to be a stop on a journey, a place where I suddenly notice something beautiful or interesting, and feel the urge to make a drawing, a painting, or a photograph. I like the idea of carrying this little book around with me (something I've often done anyway), so that when I get that urge, I make the sketch, and later, people will be able to travel with me on my little journeys around my world.

Starting the sketchbook, my kitchen - 9/29/11

I made the first sketch, to break in the book - Malkie asleep in the sun, the first thing I noticed when I came into the kitchen today, and the most beautiful thing, too.

  1. What a great idea! I also often carry a sketch book and draw whatever is in front of me, sometimes stopping to draw on an errand trip, sometimes actually going out to draw - I gues that was a lot of what was on my blog earlier this year. I made a point of trying to keep everything in the same size sketchbooks and bought 3 alike for this project. (Haven't finished Book II yet!)

Also, I had one sketch journal of a specific trip (May 2009 to Long Island, Five Islands, NS) printed this summer and have another one at the printer awaiting my writing a forward and anything else I think needs to be said beyond the text written as I made the sketches. This one is Prince Edward Island, from 1999. I'm working out one for Long Island at the other end of the Bay of Fundy, probably mostly about Brier Island, which is off the far end of this Long Island.
